The double action Walther P22 has a slide mounted, thumb operated ambidextrous safety, along with an external hammer. The design of magazine release mechanism is different from the usual semi-automatic pistol, but is certainly ambidextrous in nature as it is centrally located at the rear spot of the trigger guard. Several of Walther pistol has the same magazine release mechanism. The Walther P22 weighs in at 15 ounces and is built with conventional Double-Action/Single-Action (DA/SA) trigger. It means that the first shot can be fired with the hammer uncocked while the double-action trigger must cock the hammer first. The trigger pull in double-action is about 11 pounds, while the single-action breaks cleanly at approximately 4 lbs.
